At the start of the season, there has been a lot of talk about AC Milan’s one-competition advantage and as argued by Alessandro Florenzi, it really is an advantage.
Due to their poor finish in the league last season, Milan failed to qualify for any of the European competitions this season. Subsequently, they only have Serie A, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana to focus on, with a lot more rest than their rivals.
The fact that they usually play just one game per week has been mentioned as a huge advantage for Massimiliano Allegri and his men. Despite not having the best squad depth, especially now with all of the injuries, they can still compete at the top thanks to the additional rest.
On the flip side, some have suggested that the additional rest brings more pressure, as the expectations increase. The former Milan man Florenzi doesn’t agree with this, though, as he made clear in his interview with Gazzetta dello Sport this morning.
“No. I experienced it first-hand and I don’t agree. I think we won the Scudetto with Milan because we were eliminated from the Champions League, and therefore, we were able to work well physically. And today, being physically ready to play a match makes the difference,” he stated.
