Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike's posts after Liverpool beat Real Madrid

Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike were both full of praise following Liverpool's Champions League triumph over Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.

Alexis Mac Allister netted the decisive goal for the Premier League champions, heading in from a Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick. Mac Allister's second-half effort crowned a commanding display as Arne Slot's side brought Real's perfect Champions League run to an end.

Trent Alexander-Arnold also received an intensely hostile welcome upon his return to Anfield when he entered the pitch as a substitute during the closing 10 minutes - sparking great debate among fans and pundits alike, with Roy Keane and Gary Neville giving their opinions. The atmosphere inside Anfield was electric, with both Wirtz and Ekitike posting similar sentiments on social media afterwards.

"Great performance, thank you for the incredible atmosphere Anfield," the Germany international wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, posting on the same social media platform, Ekitike said: "Thanks Anfield.", reports the Daily Star.

Responding to the victory, Reds captain Virgil van Dijk told Amazon Prime: "I think there was a lot of energy and a lot of hard work.

"Obviously, they have won 14 in the last 15 - they have a lot of quality. We know their strengths. So, we had to be spot on in everything we do.

"I think we performed our gameplan perfectly. It is easy to say now because we won twice in a row - in a world of chaos you have to stay calm and see perspective of things."

Before he continued: "I am living with players that might have been affected by it. If you lose a game for Liverpool - four, five games – there is criticism - that is normal in a sense.

"It is over the top at times. I think it's because we live in the world of so many platforms, so many people can say stuff, and it can be picked up. Ex-players that played at the highest level had difficult moments as well.

"I want to perform for the team, the club and everyone who supports us through thick and thin."

The game wasn't without controversy, with Liverpool believing it should have had a penalty close to the end of the first half. Szoboszlai's shot from the edge of the area appeared to his Aurelien Tchouameni's hand, with the referee initially awarding the Reds a penalty.

However, after a VAR review, it was deemed Tchouameni didn't make his body bigger by extending his arm, and therefore the call was overturned, with the referee instead awarding a drop ball.

Liverpool now prepares to face Manchester City in the Premier League this Sunday, attempting to claw back at Arsenal's lead at the top of the table.
