Gabbia discusses Maignan’s renewal, Allegri’s impact and Scudetto belief: “We’re a good team”

Matteo Gabbia has insisted that AC Milan believe in winning the Scudetto this season, also shedding light on Massimiliano Allegri’s impact.

From the very early days of Allegri’s second spell in charge of Milan it was apparent that Gabbia is one of the players that he wants to build around. The Italian was installed as the anchor of the three-man defence, and he has played almost every minute this season aside from time missed with a knee issue.

For Gabbia, it is somewhat of an inspirational story given that he came through the various levels of the youth sector and – after initially struggling to get regular minutes – becoming one of the leaders of his boyhood club.

Gabbia spoke on SportMediaset XXL, answering questions from the journalist Claudio Raimondi about the Scudetto, Allegri, Mike Maignan’s renewal and even Rafael Leao’s singing. MilanNews relayed what he had to say.

Results or style of play?

“Let’s start with a bang (laughs). I’m happy if we win, so I’m siding with the results-oriented.”

On a scale of 0 to 10, how much do you believe in the Scudetto?

“We believe we can win every game we face, knowing that our opponents are there too. I’ll give you 10 because believing in something important is beautiful. We’re a good team. 10 stands for our desire to win every game.”

Which is better: winning the Scudetto with Milan or the World Cup?

Now I’m here, so winning the Scudetto with Milan.”

How much will the upcoming derby against Inter determine?

“Three points. An important match that’s as important as any other. It’s not a final that gives you a title, but a league match that will give you three points. It’ll be a spectacle, a beautiful one, but it’ll be as good as any other.”

How important is Maignan’s contract renewal?

“Very important. Mike is our captain, our leader. We’re thrilled to have him with us and we’re enjoying him to the fullest.”

What has Allegri changed in your mindset?

“Quality. He has a charisma that allows him to create that chemistry within the group. He was very good at uniting us and giving us the tactical dictates that he and his staff are good at giving us.”

Which player gave you the most trouble marking?

“I don’t know. Pick one from Inter: Lautaro, Thuram. Osimhen at Napoli. There are so many.”

A rating for Leao as a player and singer?

“Player 10. Singer I heard something, I wouldn’t go above 5.”

How are you doing with your singing?

“Bad, in fact I don’t do it.”

What do you do in your free time?

“I like spending time with my wife, dog, and friends. I like taking walks around Milan, very normal things for a 26-year-old.”
