Gabbia discusses Scudetto aims, the win against Inter and personal journey: “Give our best”

Matteo Gabbia is one of the leaders of AC Milan, and the defender, being a boyhood Milanista, is someone that many fans align with.

The story of Gabbia gets spoken of a lot, and for good reason. A loan spell at Villarreal delivered one of the most consistent defenders that Milan have seen in recent years, and given he supports the club too, that love is deeper.

Shortly after he returned, he became somewhat of a leader in the group, with many hoping that he could maybe wear the armband one day. Now, with his role within the group larger than ever, that seems possible.

Of course, he has been the captain already this season, covering when required, but it could become permanent in the future if he continues on this path.

Gabbia’s words

Speaking at an event organised with BMW and the Diavolo, Gabbia spoke to Sky Sport (via MilanNews) about the derby win and his aims.

Is there anything special about your last derby win?

“Every derby is special, especially if you’re skilled and lucky enough to win it. We’ve been working hard these past few days; yesterday we had two tough training sessions, because we know we need to be consistent.

“The most important match right now is the one against Lazio. We’re happy together: we’re a healthy group of guys who love each other. Even when we spend time together off the pitch, we’re happy.”

Are you certain you’ll fight for this Scudetto until the end?

“I think we’re very much in line with the coach; we’re clear-headed and calm. We have to work hard; we’re improving step by step thanks to the work with him and his staff.

“Then, when we reach the final stage of the year, we’ll try to do our best, but for us and the fans, this jersey demands we give our best.”

Do you expect such significant growth from yourself over the years?

“Honestly, I’ve always had the desire and ambition to become an important player for this team. I’m also aware that I need to continue improving, but I feel the same way as everyone else on this team.

“I’m happy that the team is doing well, I feel good with my teammates, and I’m a great part of the group. Let’s hope this can be a great year.”
