AC Milan return to Serie A action tonight against Bologna, but plenty of the headlines are about a dramatic deadline day.

Milan must return to winning ways at the Stadio Renato dall’Ara this evening to keep pace with the likes of Inter, Napoli and Juventus. However, a lot of the attention remains on the failed swoop for Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was set to join for €35m before failing a medical.

Today’s front pages

This morning’s newspapers in Italy have commented on the collapse of the Mateta move, while looking ahead to the game in Emilia.

La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Mateta doesn’t arrive. A problem with his knees. Milan walk away: he needs surgery. And in Bologna, Nkunku up front.”

Corriere dello Sport: “Milan empty-handed. Max’s climb. Mateta doesn’t arrive. Pulisic stays at home. Leao worry. The French striker remains at Crystal Palace: additional tests have come back negative. The American must sit out. Rafa starts on the bench. Saelemaekers out. Loftus-Cheek close to Nkunku.”

Tuttosport: “His knees are not convincing. Mateta won’t play for Milan.”

QS: “Milan, the ball passes to Allegri. Mateta’s arrival is off. On the field against Bologna away at 20:45.”
