Gary Lineker believes that Liverpool fans currently have more reasons to be cheerful than they had earlier in the season, with the Reds now on a run of four wins from their last five games.

Arne Slot's men put up a disappointing title defense that effectively ended during the first half of the season, but they are still well-positioned in the Champions League and the FA Cup. Liverpool's latest game saw the team register a 3-0 win over Brighton to advance to the fifth round of the cup, and Lineker believes the team is on an upward trajectory.

Lineker said: “I think even Arne Slot said so in the press conference after the game. He said, 'We’re in a good place.' I think one or two of the players seem to be settling in more.

"Kerkez has been one.

"I see Mo Salah looking sharper.

"It might be a time to bring him into the fantasy team.

"I sense a good run of goalscoring coming. Szoboszlai is in great form.

"So I think, you know, there's reason to be a bit more cheerful for Liverpool fans who’ve had it tough the last few months."

One of the players who has been key to Liverpool reviving its season is Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored his 10th goal of the campaign against Brighton.

Liverpool head coach Slot praised the Hungary international in his post-game press conference, saying: "I think Dominik is a great example of the model we are using here at this club: we sign young players from another league – in this situation, that was Leipzig – where he was already known for being a player that was really physical.

"But I think it's fair for me to say that the player that we brought in was already good, but where he is now, I think [he is] much better than where he was two-and-a-half years ago.

"That is what you get if you sign young players and you give them a bit of time and you let them play a lot.

"That's why I also think that the trajectory he's been through is the same trajectory we can expect from other young players we have that we've signed from other leagues.

"You can already see their progress, but I've said many times that next season or at the end of this season or in two seasons, players like Hugo [Ekitike] and Florian [Wirtz] – because these are the two that come from the Bundesliga – will be even better next year than they are already now, because they are all already very good players for us."
