Gary Neville believes Manchester United could finish above Liverpool this season and has claimed the Red Devils have an opportunity to secure a top-four place.
United’s form has drastically improved during a spell in which Liverpool’s has taken a significant downturn. Ruben Amorim’s side is unbeaten in five in the Premier League and is currently seventh place in the table, one ahead of Liverpool.
England’s two most successful sides are tied on 18 points after 11 games, and Neville said after United’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday that his former club could be in the running to secure a European spot.
“It's been a good month for United, they started this month by beating Liverpool and got eight points out of their last four Premier League games,” the ex-defender said on his own Sky Sports podcast.
“Liverpool away, Nottingham Forest away, Brighton at home and Tottenham away. It's a great result.
“But because they got six points in the first two games, there's an element of thinking: 'well, if they just got another two or three points, they'd be right up there in second’.
“United should really be thinking that if they can get it right, Tottenham as well, but it's tougher for them with European games. They should be thinking around top four, they really should because there's no one grabbing it at this moment.
“You look at Chelsea, Tottenham, who don't look sure, Liverpool don't look sure. It's there for the taking. It's about consistency.”
The Premier League heads into a two-week hiatus now before it returns for its longest unbroken run of the season.
By the time the next international break comes around, there will be just seven rounds of league fixtures left, and Neville underlined how pivotal this four-month spell will be in the campaign.
“After this international break, you've got two or three months of lots of games, the winter slog.
“It'll sort the teams out and you come out of January and see where really everybody is. But there's a good opportunity for United.
“Bournemouth have lost this weekend, Forest have picked up a win, it's starting to equalize itself out. It's starting to work itself out.”
As Neville indicated, the table is incredibly congested at present, with just two points separating third to ninth place.
Arsenal currently leads the way and is four points clear of second-place Manchester City following Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool.
