Gary Neville's face said everything as Liverpool made him relive nightmare

One result that Liverpool or Manchester United fans won't forget in a hurry from recent years – with wildly varying emotions – is the Reds' 7-0 victory over their biggest rivals in 2023.

United turned up at Anfield with the faintest of title ambitions after a brilliant run of results under Erik ten Hag following the 2022 World Cup. However, Liverpool brought United crashing back down to earth, and although the Red Devils eventually finished in third position in the table, the main thing that many Red Devils supporters remember from that season is the drubbing on Merseyside.

Gary Neville had the unenviable task of co-commentating on that game, and the footage of him reacting to each Liverpool game was hilarious – unless you're a United fan, of course.

Cody Gakpo's opener prompted a dissatisfied expression and a shake of the head, as did Darwin Nunez's doubler.

Gakpo's second goal of the game to make it 3-0 was enough for Neville to put his microphone down.

Neville looked more resigned than frustrated as he shook his head at Salah making it 4-0 and Nunez making it 5-0, and by the time Salah and Roberto Firmino made it 6-0 and 7-0 respectively, Neville was clearly ready for home.

When it was 5-0, Carragher posed for a selfie with an unimpressed Neville, which of course went viral in the aftermath of the game.

As well as being a miserable afternoon for Neville as a United fan, the scoreline was perhaps also a reminder of a result he would have wanted to forget from his own brief managerial career.

Neville lost 7-0 to Barcelona when he was the Valencia manager for a brief period during the 2015-16 season, and that was a result that Neville and Carragher actually discussed on a Monday Night Football broadcast a few years prior to United's 7-0 loss to Liverpool.

"I was at that game," Carragher recalled. "I was up in the press box. You lose a couple of goals against Barcelona early in the game, that can happen, you had a man sent off.

"At 4-0, I was looking down on you, I felt a bit sorry for you. What were you thinking there?"

Neville responded: "At that point in the season, they were unbelievable. Messi, Suarez and Neymar.

"There wasn't really anything I could do. I put them into a 4-4-1 (formation), tried to keep them compact, but the reality of it was, Barcelona were unbelievable.

"For the last half an hour, it felt terrible, it was probably the worst I've felt since I got told that Carragher was coming to Sky!"
