Gary Neville sends damning message to Arne Slot as Liverpool's concerns grow

1 day ago 57

Gary Neville has expressed his belief that Arne Slot can no longer rely on his Liverpool squad as their dismal run of form persists.

The Reds were under the impression they had secured a crucial victory against Leeds on Saturday. Dominik Szoboszlai had put Liverpool ahead with a late 3-2 lead after the home side had clawed back from a two-goal deficit.

However, Leeds refused to be beaten and equalized once more in stoppage time courtesy of Ao Tanaka. The draw at Elland Road is just the latest in a series of disappointing outcomes for the current champions this season, as their title defence continues to falter.

Offering his verdict on the Merseyside team, former Manchester United player Gary Neville suggested that Slot can no longer have faith in his players.

He said: "Liverpool, you just can't trust them. You thought it could happen. Arne Slot can't believe it. It's a mystery that continues. His team just implode. Arne Slot and the coaches, they were frantically shouting before that corner towards the Liverpool players.

"Liverpool's implosion, I said it before, is real. This is a game that was comfortable for them at 2-0. For Liverpool, despair, inconsistent, you can't trust them, you always think something is going to go wrong. They make mistake after mistake after mistake."

Liverpool now sits eighth in the league, already trailing leader Arsenal by 10 points.

When questioned if his team's struggles were due to a mentality issue, Liverpool manager Slot responded: "I don't feel that.

“Although it's never nice when you're 2-0 up, and you control the game. I think we even had the chance to go 3-0 up with Cody [Gakpo] and a counter.

"It's not even a dangerous situation that leads to a penalty and then if you play at Leeds, or no matter which stadium you play in the Premier League, then there is belief again.

"That belief becomes even stronger if the first chance they have that goes in and it's 2-2, and then I saw mentality – the mentality to come back. Not only mentality but also quality. Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] stepped over the ball... Dom was in the position we wanted him to be in today and finished it off.

"Referee then came with nine minutes of extra time, and in that nine minutes of extra time we conceded [from] a set-piece."

Liverpool returns to action on Tuesday when the team faces Italian club Inter Milan in the Champions League.

The Reds then welcome Brighton to Anfield next weekend.
