GdS: Allegri ‘delighted’ as Milan agree €18m deal for Estupinan – the details

AC Milan should soon welcome their fourth summer signing, as a deal has been agreed with Brighton for Pervis Estupinan.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) write this morning, Estupinan isn’t as well-known to the wider European public, but Milan may be the perfect setting for him to shine. He could do so under Max Allegri, who is delighted to welcome him into the squad.

Allegri has had the opportunity to appreciate him on video, where he’s often seen launching himself forwards given he has a strong attacking flair. Now, the new coach will be responsible for improving his defensive performance.

From Liverpool to Liverpool

Estupinan will be heading from Brighton to Milan, ready to sign a four-year contract with an option for a fifth. His salary is expected to be €2.5m net per season. Milan could simply be a stopover between England and Asia, if, as it seems, the player joins the team on tour.

Interestingly, his last match was last May against Liverpool: he started in the 3-2 win on the penultimate matchday of the English league season. His first for Milan? Perhaps against the Reds, if the deal has been successfully concluded and he can travel to Hong Kong by the weekend.

The final details of the deal are being sorted. The player had given his approval a few days ago, and the clubs have now reached an agreement worth €18m plus €2m in bonuses. This agreement satisfies both parties, with a compromise found between the initial €12m offer and Brighton’s €23m demands.

Career to date

In addition to his attacking prowess, Estupinan possesses great physicality, dynamism, and good pace. He’s not a goal scorer like Theo was, having netted five goals in 104 games for Brighton.

That said, Hernandez also became the all-time top goalscorer for Milan defenders, arriving after a season-high two goals for Deportivo Alaves on loan.

Pervis’s earlier career was dominated by Spain: Osasuna, Mallorca, Almería, Granada, and Villarreal, with whom he won the Europa League. Before that, he made his debut in Ecuador and… Italy.

In 2016, Udinese signed him from LDU Quito, loaning him just three days later to Granada. The following year, Estupinan moved to Watford – another club in the Pozzo universe – again without ever appearing: from there, he immediately returned to Spain.

His European appearances are split between the Europa League (four with champions Villarreal and the same number in the penultimate season with Brighton) and ten Champions League matches, all with Villarreal in 2021-22.

His opponents were Atalanta and Juventus. La Gazzetta’s rating and assessment of the victory against the Nerazzurri: 6.5, “If it’s not the usual explosive Atalanta down the flanks, it’s partly thanks to him.”

Another win with a 7-worthy performance against Juve, with the following reasoning: “It’s hard to see someone who holds Cuadrado down defensively and then challenges him, winning, with dribbling and pace.”
