GdS: ‘Anything can happen’ – Milan avoid embarrassment after 99th minute ‘sigh of relief’

The first game of the Serie A season saw AC Milan beaten at San Siro, and the first game of 2026 almost followed that same trend. Whether luck or not, they avoided that fate last night.

Before Thursday’s game against Genoa, most seemed to have a feeling of optimism that the Rossoneri were able to get results against teams outside of the European dogfight. However, a stark reminder was given.

Frustrating signs showed

As Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes, the game seemed to be heading towards a disappointing draw, but it could’ve been much worse had Stanciu not missed his spot kick in the 99th minute. A real sigh of relief.

Of course, Milan also had the chance to grab a winner, as Niclas Fullkrug came close in added time shortly after the Rossoneri had levelled the scoring. However, it was not to be and the gap at the top has only widened.

At the back, the Diavolo were sluggish for the goal and the penalty. Since Massimiliano Allegri’s arrival, these mistakes have seemed like things of the past, yet they are still here, as Gazzetta highlights. However, genuine errors have certainly been trimmed, and whilst frustrating, a season without them would be almost impossible.

Rafael Leao, despite his goal, and Luka Modric both seemed slightly off the pace, whilst the wingers could not offer any tricks. The changes helped, but it was not enough to get enough from the game as Inter now take a three-point advantage at the top.
