GdS: Arguments and thrown jackets – the times Allegri has seen red

Massimiliano Allegri will not be in the dugout for either of AC Milan’s next two games, because of offences a few months and a few days ago.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport recall, on Sunday night in the closing stages of the win over Bologna, Allegri was shown a red card for furiously protesting an overturned penalty. The jacket came off – an Allegri trademark by now – before a barrage of strong words was fired at the officials.

It resulted in a red card on the night, a one-game ban and a €10,000 fine. Allegri will also be absent on Tuesday in the Coppa Italia match against Lecce because of a two-match suspension he received in the Juventus-Atalanta final last year, of which he served one game versus Bari.

A history of seeing red

Allegri’s relationship with red cards began way back in 2012: at the end of Udinese-Milan, the Livorno-born coach allegedly addressed the referee with insults, criticising his actions. The result? A one-match ban.

A while later, 2022 would become the year of outbursts for ‘Mad Max’. At the end of Juventus-Napoli, which finished 1-1, Allegri reportedly lashed out again at the match referee for not awarding a corner.

That same year during Juve-Inter – the Coppa Italia final – Allegri completely lost his mind. First he went after Simone Inzaghi’s assistant Farris, then the referee who ordered a retake of a penalty, and finally  the entire Inter bench after Ivan Perisic made it 4-2.

Again in 2022, after Milik’s goal against Salernitana was disallowed, Allegri fired insults to the match officials, subsequently leaving the field.

Last but perhaps best was the one against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final. In injury time, Juventus did not get an attacking foul. All hell broke loose, Allegri was furious, ripping off his jacket and slamming it down. It would be his last game in charge before being sacked.
