GdS: Four players for two spots – Allegri must solve Milan’s headache in attack

Despite having an abundance of forwards, the attacking department has become AC Milan’s biggest question mark after the summer.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport write, Rafael Leao, Christian Pulisic, Christopher Nkunku and Santiago Gimenez are Milan’s four forwards. Given that the Rossoneri aren’t competing in European competition, the four could be more than enough.

The issue is different and concerns the formation because the players are there, but the attacking concept isn’t clear. Massimiliano Allegri must find the answers.

How many forwards?

Throughout the summer, it was rumoured that Allegri would use a 4-3-3, then he made it clear thata 3-5-2 will be the base formation. A duo of Leao and Pulisic or Nkunku with Gimenez immediately springs to mind, as a result.

Nkunku, the latest arrival, is a multipurpose forward, not a traditional striker. Only Gimenez fits that bill. Allegri has said he’ll come up with something. In theory, Leao and Nkunku seem like a very interesting pairing, but if that happens then will the ever-reliable Pulisic really be benched?

The 3-4-2-1 formation could solve the puzzle, but will Allegri leave out a midfielder to add a striker? And then there’s the question of what will happen to Gimenez: is it possible that a striker who cost €30m in the January transfer window could be left as fourth choice?

Allegri, the alchemist, must find the right formula quickly. Bologna on Sunday at San Siro will be well up for it, just as they were in May in the Coppa Italia final.
