AC Milan have effectively signed the deal to renew Mike Maignan’s contract, so the news today will only be a bright reminder of the reason for their struggle.
This season, Maignan has made several fine performances, making big saves in key moments. Milan have been saved several times by the shot-stopper. However, with each save, there was a lingering worry about his future.
After all, the Frenchman only had a few months on his deal at present, and it seemed he would not be renewing. Things have now changed, though, so the Rossoneri can enjoy without worrying.
Best in Europe
As Gazzetta dello Sport writes, he is now officially the best goalkeeper in Europe, with stats showing him having the best record in the top leagues.
There is a 9.27 difference between the number of goals that he has conceded and the amount that he was expected to concede (xGA), which is a staggering difference and the best. Whilst his save percentage is not as high (he is the fifth-ranked), he still scored highly with around an 80% save rate.
To add to this, he makes around two ‘dangerous shot’ saves per game, where he still ranks highly at 40th. However, as part of a less leaky defence, this was always going to be the case.
