GdS: Milan-Fiorentina a ‘turning point’ for the Scudetto – the five reasons why

This weekend’s result may have proved that AC Milan can be a Scudetto contender this season. It is early, but they have a chance.

A 2-1 win is not necessarily the mark of champions in some respects. Perhaps winning by a few goals may be, but a narrow win may not be the defining result for many. However, this morning, Gazzetta dello Sport suggested it may have been.

Five ways to show a turn

It starts with a reaction. After all, Milan were behind in the game and got themselves level and then ahead. This is without even considering the lack of players that were available to Massimiliano Allegri. A display of heart and character, indeed.

Against Udinese, Allegri was left annoyed by the Rossoneri’s lack of first moves, despite them being 3-0 up. It is all about details, and it seems his squad knows this now, as was shown in the game. Luka Modric blocked Nicolussi-Caviglia, whilst Rafael Leao annoyed Pongracic. Perhaps Allegri wants even more, but they are showing the right signs.

The next points relate to the defence and attack. At the back, the goal conceded was a bit sloppy, but it was the only threat of the game, and it was due to internal mistakes, rather than them being outplayed. Going forward, any player has the opportunity to score, as Strahinja Pavlovic and Fikayo Tomori scored. Chance creation is easy for the Diavolo; they just must be more ruthless.

Finally, the squad are aware of their successes, but not overly aware. The team knows their strengths and where they can do better, identifying these areas themselves. After all, they are also aware of the strengths and demands of their coach. Sunday was great proof of it.
