AC Milan had big expectations for the Futuro project, and it certainly did not start well with relegation. However, it is still proving to be a success.
The relegation to Serie D could have closed the door on the Milan Futuro project. Instead, though, it has been strengthened, and there is a case to be made about its successes already. In fact, the drop-down may have been a boost.
The positives shine brightly
Of course, relegation to Serie D was never planned and the Rossoneri have had to play the cards that they were dealt. Nevertheless, as Gazzetta dello Sport writes, with more than €15 million invested and the foundations set, it would have been silly to give up on the project, even during the disheartening days.
As Jovan Kirovski stated, ‘Results are moments. Growth is a story,’ and this is true where the young Diavolo are concerned. The synergy between the Primavera and Futuro is, perhaps, stronger than ever, and this shows with a number of youngsters making the step up.

Though the Primavera has not been the only hunting ground for the Futuro. Instead, the club have looked to the mercato for players to develop too, and this is why Yahya Idrissi arrived from Chelsea and Magnus Dalpiaz from Bayern.
Whilst there was certainly a reputational drop, due to the relegation, the successes of Davide Bartesaghi and Alex Jimenez shows that Milan are doing the right things. Now it is just a case of improving the succession rate.
