GdS: Milan lead Inter and San Siro leads Europe – the attendance data so far in 2025-26

AC Milan are leading Inter when it comes to average attendances at home games, having won the battle last season too.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) report this morning, Milan home games average 72,916 spectators compared to their rivals’ 70,814. The Rossoneri have already faced Napoli and Roma at San Siro though, while the Nerazzurri have some big games to come.

The derby on November 23rd – with Inter ‘at home’ – could already bring the two contenders closer. But beyond the Milanese battle, one indisputable fact remains: Milano is the capital of football and is driving the entire Serie A, in a year of renewed desire to visit the stadium.

Red and black leads

Inter and Milan’s dominance at the top of the league has an impact, but only to a certain extent. Last season, for example, the Rossoneri averaged 71,512 spectators, the highest in Italy, despite a disappointing league finish.

Speaking of Milan, the Meazza’s average home attendance of nearly 73,000 is the highest since 1992-93. Back then, Fabio Capello’s team drew a staggering 77,000 spectators per game to San Siro, but it should also be noted that the stadium had a capacity of over 85,000 before safety regulations saw it slashed.

The ‘customers’ have certainly changed as well: those who go to the Meazza today can easily notice the increase in the percentage of tourists or fans from abroad. It’s a reflection of the times, a phenomenon that began in England, for example, at least a decade ago.

If we broaden the discussion to the whole of Europe, Milan are the only Italian team to enter the top five behind Borussia Dortmund (81,365), Bayern Munich (75,000), Manchester United (73,969) and Real Madrid (73,782).

Inter are hot on their heels in the special ranking of stadium attendance. In 2024-25, the Nerazzurri averaged 70,129 fans, but it should not be forgotten that the team then coached by Simone Inzaghi went all the way to the Champions League final.

The last season that saw Inter higher than Milan – and therefore led Serie A – was in 2023-24 (72,838 versus 72,000), the year of the Nerazzurri’s last Scudetto. Back then, the aggregate figure of nearly 145,000 marked an all-time record for Milan, at least in modern times.

However, if the two Milanese teams were to keep the Scudetto race going until the very end, a new record could be set. For comparison, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid currently have a combined attendance of 135,935, with a capacity of less than 90%.

Behind Milan and Inter, Roma are next in Italy with an average attendance of nearly 63,000. And who knows, the figure could rise even further if Gian Piero Gasperini’s men manage to stay at the top for a long time. Italian champions Napoli are fourth with an average attendance of over 51,000, followed by Lazio with nearly 46,000.

As for Juventus, it’s a classic example of how size matters, specifically that of the Allianz Stadium: the average attendance of 41,089 for the Bianconeri’s home games is largely due to the Turin stadium’s capacity of just 41,507.
