GdS: Milan must ‘avoid any regrets’ with Maignan situation – the current feeling

Mike Maignan’s departure from AC Milan on a free transfer remains likely at present, but the management must try again.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport‘s Stefano Agresti writes, some fans hadn’t even entered San Siro or taken their seats in front of the TV when Maignan made a huge save early on in the win over Lazio, tipping Mario Gila’s goal-bound header wide.

Milan must have no regrets

The match could have gone very differently if Maignan hadn’t kept that attempt out, but instead the Rossoneri secured another win and another clean sheet to move back top of the Serie A standings after 13 rounds.

That intervention reaffirmed that Maignan has ‘returned to Scudetto year form’. In 2021-22, it was thanks to him that points were obtained as if they were goals from a centre-forward. There is a problem though: the magic might only be around for a few more months.

Milan and Maignan have agreed to coexist peacefully and professionally until June, the month in which the Frenchman’s contract expires, and then we’ll see where his future lays from 2026-27 onwards.

The feeling is that – if that potential discussion is so far away – a farewell is ‘at least likely’. It would be a seriously loss for Milan given his leadership status too, so it’s ‘worth trying every way to convince him that Milan is the best home for him’ in order to ‘avoid any regrets’.
