With the World Cup next summer, Luka Modric wanted to continue playing football in an elite setting, and he chose to do so with AC Milan.
When he arrived, few expected him to be as instrumental as he has been, in both ways. There were doubts about whether he could perform to the same level and then about his minutes. Yet, in both categories, he has been flawless.
To keep up his season with the Rossoneri, though, he has sacrificed some minutes with the Croatian national team, as Gazzetta dello Sport reports (seen below).
Modric’s plan
Modric likes to plan everything, and that is why he has returned to Italy with fuel in the tank, after ‘rationed’ minutes with the national team. Against Gibraltar, he started from the bench and then played the last 20 to seal the game.
With the Rossoneri, there has been little chance to rest, given that Massimiliano Allegri is ‘unwilling’ to give up on the Croatian midfielder so far. After all, why drop the diamond of your midfield for no reason?
With his early return, he also visited the Vismara Centre, getting a chance to meet the Diavolo’s promising youngsters, offering advice to them and letting them know he too once stood where they did.
Tactical performances
At least with his national team, he can manage his own schedule; he knows his body religiously after all. There was also no need to really put extra work into his schedule, with Croatia already nearly qualified for next summer’s tournament, which is only a point away.
On the other hand, there is also the Diavolo to consider. The Serie A season is long, and he knows that it will be a marathon, so saving energy where he can will be vital to him. Having a peak Modric in the latter months when points mean more will be a must.
His dedication and ability to work despite his accolades are rubbing off on his teammates, as can be seen already. This alone is so valuable, and Milan do not want to lose it.
