GdS: Pulisic incident brings flashbacks from previous Genoa clash – the reasoning

Last night, AC Milan were denied an equaliser as Christian Pulisic was deemed to have scored with his arm. A very harsh call, and without it, perhaps the result would have been different.

When Pulisic equalised last night, there was a belief that Milan could somehow salvage something from a game which already seemed to be beyond them. However, it was ruled out due to the involvement of his arm.

An almost perfect summary of the game, really. It was not the first time that the American had had a decision like that involving him, though.

Flashbacks for Pulisic

Gazzetta dello Sport recalls the match at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in October 2023, the night remembered mainly for Olivier Giroud’s antics between the sticks. That night, though, Pulisic was also on the end of another tough call.

In the 87th minute, the American received the ball from a Yunus Musah cross, and despite it being a goal, it was checked heavily. The reasoning was a little unclear, but because he had controlled the ball between his armpit and shoulder, it had to be looked at.

A controversial decision at the time, and one that was very similar to last night’s call. At the time, Open VAR stated that the situation was ‘difficult’, due to where the ball hit and the lack of certainty from VAR. So, on that occasion, it stood.

It will be interesting to see what is said about last night’s incident…
