GdS: Seven-year plan for the new San Siro – what will happen and when

1 hour ago 21

AC Milan and Inter received confirmation that they can go ahead with San Siro plans, with approval of the sale of the stadium, this morning.

Now, the next question is what happens and when. Of course, some things cannot be given exactly. However, a roadmap has been laid out, and things can be anticipated between dates. In other words, we can piece together what may happen.

San Siro plan

This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport provided a step-by-step guide. So, it starts, at least officially now, but the first real step comes on November 10, when a sale has to be completed. The next 40 days must provide green lights from banks, and then the paperwork must be completed, too.

If this does not happen by this date, then the stadium can no longer be demolished; it is a race against time in that sense.

In the next 9-12 months, Manica and Foster + Partners will develop a design for the new stadium, though construction will not begin at this point. From Paolo Scaroni, we know that it will be a 72,000-seat stadium. Although this design must also be approved by other relevant parties, which isn’t easy.

Before then, there will be appeals to the Regional Administrative Court (TAR), largely from those who want San Siro to remain the home of football in Milano.

Permitting nothing stops the plans from going ahead, early work will begin in 2027, specifically, the first part of the year. It would be a ‘major construction site’ which would also, eventually, include the Patroclo Tunnel.

Then, in 2031, the new stadium will open, after four years of construction. Both stadiums, at this point, would be in operation: the new one for matches, the old one as a venue. At least until the current San Siro is destroyed within 12 months of the new stadium’s opening.

Then, in June 2032, the new San Siro will be one of the European Championship host stadiums. Permitting all goes to plan.

  1. Sign paperwork by November 10
  2. Manica and Foster + Partners begin designs – Next 9-12 months
  3. Early work begins on new San Siro – Early 2027
  4. Completion of the project – 2031
  5. Host the European Championship – 2032
