GdS: Size, presence and grinta – why Füllkrug could be what Milan need

1 day ago 4

At first glance, there can be questions about why AC Milan made the decision to sign Niclas Fullkrug. However, it may be a move that benefits others rather than him specifically.

Signing a player from a relegation-threatened Premier League side, who has failed to impress there, does not really sound like the move expected of title challengers in January. Yet, Milan have done this and it may be what pulls them over the line for the Champions League, or maybe more?

Upside visible

As Gazzetta dello Sport writes, Fullkrug’s first 20 minutes in a Rossoneri-coloured shirt were not mindblowing. However, they showed signs of a revolution. He came close to getting an assist and showed that he may be the missing piece in the attack.

His first five actions from the Cagliari game describe him perfectly: an aerial duel, hold-up play, pressing, a big tackle and some off-the-ball movement. The report states that the Diavolo do not have someone who consistently offers two of these things, let alone five.

There are downsides to his game, of course, but it mainly stems from his lack of speed, which may be problematic in a team that is so deadly on the counter.

Nevertheless, he arrived with the desire to apply himself and instantly make an impact, which feeds into what Allegri seemingly desires from him. An impact player to change the game when needed. Will he be the first choice? Rarely, if ever. However, he can be a fantastic catalyst for change in the late stages.

Fullkrug’s arrival was a low-cost one, with no mandatory future ties. The downside is slim, but the upside is substantial. It is now just up to the coach to decide how best to use him.
