The days leading up to the Derby della Madonnina always sees tactical clues emerge, and Chivu reportedly has a plan to limit Luka Modric.
According to this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), the Inter head coach recognises the importance of keeping Modric quiet. He is Milan’s metronome both creatively and defensively, so he has drawn up a plan which involves an enemy to the red side of the city.
The anti-Modric
The paper speaks of Hakan Calhanoglu having been ‘rebuilt mentally and physically’ by the Romanian coach, and as being the key to Sunday night’s match against his former team.
Massimiliano Allegri’s Croatian regista is considered – even by Calha himself – to be the best player of the past decade in that role. The Turk will try to mirror him given he too now plays a deeper role then when at Milan, but of course will try to beat him too.
The instructions given by Chivu to Calhanoglu show it: Hakan will have to limit Modric as much as possible, while being the usual spark for fast attacks at the other end. Ultimately, much of this derby will depend on Hakan’s ability to win the direct duel with the former Ballon d’Or winner.

Calhanoglu left Turkey’s camp on Sunday, accompanied by a medical statement detailing a hand problem that still needs to be fully assessed. The Turkish national team captain would not play today against Spain because he was already on a booking, with World Cup play-offs to come.
The ex-Leverkusen man returned to Milano last night, and today he will enjoy the day off that Chivu reserves for all internationals without exception. In any case, the Nerazzurri medical staff immediately contacted the Turkish team and were reassured about Hakan’s hand condition.
Upon his return to Appiano Gentile he will be reassessed, but there doesn’t seem to be any clouds on the horizon. Chivu also personally checked on his player’s health and received reassurances from the No.20.
The most heated part of this derby could have disappeared over the summer, when Calhanoglu seemed to have decided to return to Turkey, to join Galatasaray. Instead, he will now look to come out on top against someone he considers an idol. Many have tried and failed.
