There were quite a few talking points from the game against Roma this weekend, and AC Milan’s Alexis Saelemaekers was at the heart of one.
One talking point led to another. Paulo Dybala stepped up, but his penalty was saved by Mike Maignan. Then, Saelemaekers turned and celebrated, which some may have perceived to be in the referee’s face.
Nevertheless, his act of celebrating should not be considered to be a factor which plays into things. In those moments, adrenaline takes over, and with the potential value of that save, it is a reaction that most will have mirrored; on the pitch, at San Siro, at home.

From that moment, the referee, Guida, got closer and the Belgian almost made contact when he finished celebrating. However, contact then did occur, with the referee reaching out his leg and kicking Saelemaekers.
Guida all good
In the past few days, a lot has been said about the reaction. However, it seems that is all it will be. This morning’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport states that the Italian Referees Association (AIA) will take no action.
So, there will be no consequences given to Guida, despite there clearly being contact made. Perhaps a slightly questionable decision…
