Genoa 1-2 AC Milan Women: Ijeh and Koivisto score in dramatic late comeback

AC Milan Women started their league season in the best possible way, coming from behind to win 2-1 with a late turnaround.

The Rossonere have been preparing to formally begin their 2025-26 Serie A season, and there is some mystery about what to expect after a tough couple of years. A report during the week outlined how Elisabet Spina – the Head of Women’s Football – wants Milan to quickly become a top European club.

Well, things have certainly started well with an incredible and almost unexpected victory for Milan, who came from behind to defeat Genoa in the closing stages to secure their first league win by a 2-1 scoreline.

Genoa are a newly promoted side so there is no need to get too carried away, but the home side were well-organised and posed a threat on the counter-attack. After a balanced first half, with more chances for the Rossonere, the home side took the lead right on the stroke of the whistle.

Søndergaard got it as she was well positioned in the centre of the area to execute a set piece move. Milan had a few chances early in the second half, before the final rush which nobody really saw coming.

Genoa’s Bargi hit the post in the final 10 minutes, then Bakker’s side turned things around with Ijeh and Koivisto, who scored in the 83rd and 97th minutes respectively.

Dompig’s brilliant cross found Ijeh, who headed into the corner to level the score at 1-1. Milan then laid siege until the end, with two great saves from Forcinella in the 93rd minute before the winner.  Arrigoni’s shot from outside the area was deflected, and Koivisto reacted first to head in.

The next match is at home against Roma, another high-level test, on Sunday at 12:30 CEST.
