Mexico striker Santiago Giménez wants to get one over on his AC Milan team-mates in Sunday’s Gold Cup final against the United States.
It will certainly be another heated contest between the two big rivals in North American football. Mexico are looking to extend their record as all-time leader in Gold Cup titles with nine, while the United States are two behind them.
Gimenez spoke in front of reporters ahead of the final, which will take place at the NRG Stadium in Houston at 01:00 CEST. His comments were relayed by ESPN.
“I’m really looking forward to it [the final], because in the end, it’s the North American clasico, and the last few games against the United States have been really tough,” Giménez said.
“Also, because I have [Christian] Pulisic and [Yunus] Musah in the [Milan] locker room, so I want to go and make fun of them a little. As I said before, it’s the North American clasico, and it’s not just today, it’s always been [a clasico].
“I think the rivalry with the United States in football has always been there, and it’s a wonderful thing, it’s part of football. Every national team, every club has its clasico, its rival to beat, and I think our rival to beat is the United States.”
It must be noted that neither Musah nor Pulisic will be there to face Gimenez, having been made unavailable along with some other stars of the USMNT. Nonetheless, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be fired up and full of hope that they can get a first bit of silverware in his early tenure.
