Santiago Gimenez has dismissed any remote chance of a summer move, insisting he will be at AC Milan next season.
In recent weeks, with Milan’s search for another top-tier striker having been publicly broadcasted, there have been rumours of a possible move away for Gimenez. In our recent Devil’s Advocate column, we wrote at length about why it would be a bad idea to cast him aside.
The Mexican currently on vacation after his commitments with his national team, who won the Gold Cup by beating the United States in the final in Houston a week ago. The idea of him leaving the Rossoneri after just a few months meanwhile is nonsense, as he has now confirmed.
Gimenez going nowhere
In an interview with Fox Sports Mexico, he briefly discussed his Milan future before going on to speak about the national team, and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.
There have been rumours about leaving Milan…
“Every year, different teams have linked me with them. Every time a team is interested, they try to take me away from the team I’m with, but you’ll see me at AC Milan next season.”
You didn’t play much in the Gold Cup, was that hard?
“You always aim to play as many minutes as possible. The truth is that I didn’t play as I expected or wanted, but I’m very happy with the result.
“You can see the confidence in the team. I see it as very solid, and I have a lot of faith in coach Aguirre and his coaching staff, so I’m confident that whatever decision he makes is the best one. Aguirre is very wise, he has a lot of experience.
“His football may or may not be liked, but it’s contagious and you can see it on the pitch. The starting eleven runs, and the substitutes run too, and that counts for a lot. We’ve built a very competitive group. I think we can compete with anyone; we won’t back down against anyone.”
The 2026 World Cup must be a dream?
“Ultimately, it’s football, anything can happen, and I want to dream big. I always try to believe. I’m sure we’ll have a great World Cup and make history. I’m setting myself the biggest goal possible, and that’s to become world champion.
“I know many will say it’s almost impossible, but Leicester were Premier League champions even though everyone said it was impossible.”
Luka Jovic could end up at your old club, Cruz Azul…
“He would be a great reinforcement. He’s a lethal number nine, he’s a killer in the penalty area.”
