Guglielmo Vicario reveals why winning Super Cup with Tottenham is a unique dream for him

Guglielmo Vicario is extremely excited to take to the field in a big European final in his home city of Udine, as Tottenham look forward to the Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Some of the feel-good factor around Spurs at the start of the Thomas Frank era dissipated when they were drubbed by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena last week.

The game exposed the Lilywhites’ shortcomings, and Frank confessed that his players were lacking in energy against Bayern.

Spurs fans were previously not too optimistic about their side’s chances against PSG, and the thrashing at the Allianz Arena has only added to the sense of negativity ahead of the Super Cup clash on Wednesday.

Guglielmo Vicario insists Tottenham earned the right to compete for the Super Cup

While Tottenham will be taking on arguably the best side in world football on Wednesday, Frank believes that Spurs can beat PSG and get their hands on the trophy.

It will be a special day for Udine-born Vicario, who spent three seasons at Udinese as a youngster without making a single appearance for the club.

When asked about returning to Stadio Friuli for such a big clash, the goalkeeper told The Athletic: “(Udine) is a small city, so just to imagine being involved in such an important game, a European final again, is a dream.

“It’s a big achievement for the club. What we did in Bilbao (beating Manchester United in the Europa League final), we earned the right to play against PSG. It will be amazing. A lot of people close to me, friends and members of my family, will be watching. We were season ticket holders at Udinese.”

Vicario says he will remember Heung-min Son forever

One man who will not be donning the Spurs shirt in the final is Heung-min Son, who has officially completed the switch to Los Angeles FC.

Emotional tributes have poured in from Tottenham players for Son, and now Vicario has joined in, admitting that he will never forget what he achieved alongside the South Korean in North London.

When asked about the former Tottenham captain’s departure, the Italian said: “I would have loved to stay with him forever. I love him as a human being. We shared a dressing room for two seasons, and we won a massive trophy. We will remember each other and see each other. We will share this good stuff about what we did in Bilbao that night.

“It will stay with me forever because we created history together. He was my captain on that day, so I will be grateful to him for eternity. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m just happy for him. What he has done in his football career and life, he is a wonderful human being. He deserves the best.”
