Harry Kane comments on Luis Diaz should ring loud in Liverpool's ears

1 hour ago 28

Harry Kane hailed Luis Diaz after the former Liverpool player netted a stunning strike against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Diaz has started his Bayern career brilliantly, registering 11 goals and five assists in all competitions, including both goals in the team's win over Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain last week.

Diaz's involvement in that game ended prematurely when he was sent off at the end of the first half, but he was back on the field for Bayern's game in Berlin on Saturday. In the 38th minute, Diaz produced a moment of magic as he finished from a remarkably tight angle to equalize after the home side had taken the lead earlier in the half.

After the game, Kane, who rescued a point for Bayern in second-half stoppage time, praised Diaz for his brilliant strike.

"Incredible to be honest," Kane said of the goal. "The way he kept the ball in and got past his defender and then score was, just a special goal, a really, really special goal.

"He's been pulling stuff out like that all season, but I reckon that's probably his best."

Liverpool has missed Diaz at times this season, with Cody Gakpo having managed just two goals in his last nine Premier League appearances ahead of Sunday's game against Manchester City.

At times last season, Slot rotated Gakpo and Diaz on the left wing, but Diaz's exit left Slot without a similar alternative to Gakpo in the first-team squad.

Teenager Rio Ngumoha has appeared sporadically, while Florian Wirtz lined up on the left flank against Real Madrid last week.

Wirtz was forced out onto the left wing to accommodate last season's preferred midfield trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister.

Wirtz has faced criticism for his performances since moving to Anfield, but Reds boss Slot defended him ahead of Sunday's trip to Manchester City, after Arsene Wenger had said that Liverpool "destroyed" its midfield with the addition of the German.

“Everyone has a right to his own opinion,” said Slot on Wenger. “We have five or six very good midfielders who can all play together but they need to play more together to get the best out of every single player.

"Florian needs time to adapt to his teammates, and teammates need time to adapt to him.

"Now he played off the left, but I can tell you, if it is not now, it is tomorrow, he will have great performances as a midfielder for Liverpool as well.”
