Harry Maguire makes 'pretty comfortable' claim after Man Utd win over Liverpool

2 weeks ago 10

Manchester United center-back Harry Maguire has claimed his team found things "pretty comfortable" against Liverpool this weekend with the England ace netting the winner from a Bruno Fernandes cross.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring after less than two minutes when Alexis Mac Allister was down with a head injury, before Cody Gakpo equalized in the second period. Maguire then popped up inside the Liverpool penalty area to send the away section at Anfield into raptures.

"Staying in the game when they scored that equalizer," Maguire responded when BBC Match of the Day asked him what the key to winning the game was.

"Although they had a lot of pressure in the game in the second half and Gakpo hit the post, aside from that I don't think they made that many chances and we felt pretty comfortable. Then they open us up with a well-worked goal.

"We could have really sunk our heads and gone under in that moment but we got together, and that is the most pleasing thing. The crowd was right behind them.

"Our fans, with what they have experienced in recent years, must have been fearing the worst. To come back from that and score the winner was really important."

Ruben Amorim has now won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time. Manchester United won at Liverpool for the first time in almost a decade, extending its unbeaten run at Anfield since the 7-0 hammering in 2023.

"Harry Maguire is really important for us," Amorim said. "He was really important for us today, he is a great example on that.

"Everything that he has been through. It's a good example for every kid. And now he has to recover to be ready for Brighton.

"Sometimes the luck is so important in football. We had some games that we are playing well in and we suffer a goal, today we start with a goal [inside two minutes].

"I think twice [Cody] Gakpo shot on the post. Sometimes we just need some moments to change the narrative of one game. That is important for us and our players to understand, but they did a great job."

Liverpool.com says: While the Reds didn't play well and only had themselves to blame for losing late in the game, they did have 19 shots including some really clear-cut chances to score.

Had Alexander Isak and Mohamed Salah been on form, Liverpool could have won the game by a decent margin and made things far from comfortable for Maguire and co. When Arne Slot's attack clicks into gear, its defensive weaknesses won't be so glaringly obvious.
