A moment that many doubted would ever arrive has indeed arrived today: AC Milan and Inter have bought San Siro from the City Council.
The news arrived on Wednesday afternoon that Milan and Inter are now the official owners of the existing stadium and the surrounding area, after the deed of sale was signed. It is the first big step as part of the stadium project, in which a new home will be constructed perpendicular to it.
The lawyer Felice Raimondo has covered the stadium saga in its entirety, and he is publishing a new book called ‘The Unfinished Cathedral’ which will be out by the end of the year. It has dozens and dozens of in-depth analyses on the 10-year journey to this point.
On his social media, he published a graphic that has come from the plan documents regarding the part-demolition of San Siro, which will be necessary given that a new 71,500-seat stadium will be going up next door.
For the first time, we can begin to visualise the small amount that will remain standing. A section of the corner will be preserved, from the Curva Sud end, as well as some of the external ramp structure which makes San Siro iconic.
However, it is also very clear that there will be very little left from the concrete behemoth that sits there now. Construction on the future home should begin in 2027, as per the plans.
