How yellow and red card suspensions will work between Serie A and Supercoppa

1 day ago 29

AC Milan will soon participate in the 2025-26 edition of the Supercoppa Italiana, scheduled to face Napoli just before Christmas. Indeed, with less than a month to go, it’s worth taking a look at the suspension rules.

So far this season, not a single Milan player has served a suspension due to the yellow card accumulations, i.e. picking up too many yellow cards across several games. On the other hand, there have been a few red cards.

In fairness, Pervis Estupinan is the only player to have picked up a red card (one-game ban), while Massimiliano Allegri has picked up the other two of the three red cards. The gaffer will miss Monday’s clash against Torino as a result of his most recent one.

Rules to know

Ahead of the Supercoppa Italiana, the big question is whether suspensions will carry over from Serie A to the competition. The answer is no, but suspensions will carry over from the Supercoppa Italiana to Serie A, which is worth taking into consideration.

As outlined by Serie A, the following is what the participating teams should be aware of:

  • A player/coach sent off on the matchday before the start of the Supercoppa Italiana, or with a suspension still to be served, will serve the suspension or the remainder of the same in the league match(es) following the Supercoppa Italiana.
  • A player/coach who is one yellow away from suspension before the start of the Supercoppa Italiana, and is cautioned in the semi-final, will serve the suspension in the league match following the Supercoppa Italiana.
  • A player/coach who is one yellow away from suspension before the start of the Supercoppa Italiana, and is cautioned in the final, will serve the suspension in the league match following the Supercoppa Italiana.
  • A player/coach who is one yellow away from suspension before the start of the Supercoppa Italiana, and is cautioned in both the semi-final and the final, will serve the suspension in the league match following the Supercoppa Italiana. The player in question will then start with an additional yellow card (i.e. 6 yellow cards, or 11 yellow cards) after the one-game suspension.
  • A player/coach sent off in the semi-final will serve the suspension in the final, while any additional games from the suspension will be served in the league match(es) following the Supercoppa Italiana.
  • A player/coach sent off in the final will serve the suspension in the league match(es) following the Supercoppa Italiana.

In short, it’s pretty much what you would expect. The fact that the suspensions will carry over to the league means the players will have to be careful not to take any ‘frustration cards’ in the semi-final or final.
