‘Huge move for Milan’ – Moretto and Romano confirm Maignan will renew until 2031

Some fantastic news has arrived regarding the future of Mike Maignan on the eve of AC Milan’s game against Roma.

Maignan has largely been outstanding this season for Milan, back to his best form under Massimiliano Allegri and the new goalkeeping coach Claudio Filippi. With this resurgence came speculation that a renewal was becoming more and more possible after months of frosty relations.

In the past few days, these rumours have reached the point of talk about agreements being in place. It is believed to be a new five-year deal, therefore running until 2031, and it will see Maignan become the joint-highest earlier.

Moretto and Romano: Maignan renewal done

Fabrizio Romano has now tweeted the following: “Milan and Mike Maignan reach verbal agreement over new deal until June 2031! Formal steps to follow but deal in place for French GK who was out of contract in June 2026. Huge move for Milan with Maignan seen as key player.”

In a video on YouTube, Matteo Moretto added: “Mike Maignan will renew his contract with Milan until 2031 and will become one of the highest-paid players in the Milan squad: a salary of 5 million euros net per year plus 2 million in bonuses, which is roughly the same as Rafa Leao’s.

“It was a long negotiation. A year ago, Maignan had already said yes to Milan, he had already accepted all the conditions proposed by Milan, but when the parties then got to the documents, the signatures, Milan decided to take time for several reasons. In short, partly an economic question, partly a sporting question and the Maignan renewal discussion had frozen.

“The sporting changes at Milan, in terms of results and management of the sporting side under Massimiliano Allegri, with all of Allegri’s staff who, however, greatly helped Maignan return to being the goalkeeper he was, also helped Maignan get closer to Milan.

“Let me tell you a little behind the scenes: in recent months, two teams have gotten very close to Maignan. The first was Bayern Munich, who came to see him several times at San Siro, but never made a decisive move. And then Juventus.

“Juventus had intense discussions with Maignan’s entourage between November and December, but their response was one of wait-and-see. Maignan took his time, the answer was ‘let’s see, we’ll see after February-March’.

“So let’s say it’s true that Juventus was ready to propose a significant contract, but Magnana asked for time and put Juventus on hold because he wanted to first understand the type of project, the type of offer, the type of rapprochement from Milan that occurred in December.

“In December, Milan pushed hard until they finally reached the final agreements. As I was telling you, he will renew the contract until 2031, only the final meeting is missing before we can get to the signatures, but everything is agreed upon.”
