Hugo Ekitike sends cryptic message to Liverpool transfer critics in Community Shield

3 days ago 37

Liverpool newcomer Hugo Ekitike has captured attention with his goal celebration that appears to be aimed directly at critics.

The French striker put the Reds ahead inside four minute of the Community Shield game against Crystal Palace at Wembley. It was his first goal in a competitive fixture after the 23-year-old sealed a move to the Reds last month for an initial fee of £69 million ($91.74 million) from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Fellow newcomer Florian Wirtz spotted Ekitike between the lines from the left with a beautiful pass. Ekitike creates space for himself and then drills the ball into the bottom corner with precision.

However, its the 23-year-old's celebration that has got fans talking.

Ekitike marked the opener with talking hand gestures seemingly aimed at those critcizing his move to Anfield.

Many believe that the youngster has a point to prove as he returns to the top level after being unable to make his mark at Paris Saint Germain.

Though it’s still early days for the France Under-21 international at Liverpool, he’s already embracing his role in Arne Slot's dynamic attack.

Ekitike has already made a strong impression in red and has promised fans that there’s more to come.

"I enjoyed it a lot, it was such a good atmosphere for a first game for me," he expressed post the double header against Athletic Club.

"I feel proud and I just wish I will play so many games in this stadium because it is amazing.I am here now for more than one week so I'm still trying to find connections with the others in the last passes and even before. I enjoy playing with them.

"Outside of the pitch they are good guys also. So, I take pleasure to play with them. We have some little things to fix to get better.

"Even me with the ball, I knew I could do better today. But I really enjoy playing with them and I'm sure we're going to make really good things this season."

Liverpool.com says: Ekitike’s goal celebration was a bold statement that showed he’s not just here to make up the numbers. It sent a clear message to critics that he’s confident, motivated, and ready to prove his worth at Liverpool.

Moments like these can help a new signing quickly win over fans and set the tone for their season ahead.
