‘I have this nightmare’ – Capello shares thoughts on San Siro situation

Fabio Capello believes that there is a duty to ‘modernise’ San Siro in order to ensure AC Milan and Inter remain there.

To try and summarise things briefly, Milan and Inter have announced their plans to buy the current stadium and surrounding areas, to then part-demolish San Siro after building a new state of the art home next door.

The sale of San Siro has been agreed with the council but must now be voted through, with Monday the decisive day and things too close to call at the moment. If the notion were accepted the Foster and Manica can get to work; if rejected then San Donato might be in the headlines again.

A San Siro ‘nightmare’

Capello spoke during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) about the future of the stadium, and he admitted that the clubs need something newer.

“The way it’s currently conceived, we need to say goodbye . We need to propose something different, new, in line with the modernity that surrounds us,” he said.

“I have this nightmare that this facility, so dear to me, could become a cathedral in the desert, abandoned to itself. And Milan cannot afford that. Italian football cannot afford that. San Siro must continue to be a symbol, but in line with modernity.

“What happened with the 2032 European Championship makes me very sad. It’s incredible that a city like Milan doesn’t have a stadium for this event, especially after various debates about it. Over the last 15 years, the city has grown exponentially. It’s incredible that the stadium issue is still at a standstill.

“San Siro needs to be modernized and turned into a jewel. But I recognise the need to have a stadium in line with the times. Here we are still debating the bureaucracy.”
