‘I’m convinced of his talent’ – Deschamps reiterates faith in Nkunku after France call-up

Christopher Nkunku has been given a big boost as he was called back up for the France squad for the first time in close to a year.

The announcement regarding the France squad came this afternoon, and it is no surprise to see the Milan duo of Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot there. There is still no room for Youssouf Fofana, but scanning down to the forwards section, Nkunku’s name was a surprise to some.

The forward made the move to Milan from Chelsea in the summer and – given the investment of €37m+ – is expected to have a more prominent role. He has already scored a goal, netting in the 3-0 Coppa Italia win over Lecce last week.

The 27-year-old has not played for his country since the UEFA Nations League game against Italy on 17 November 2024. He played 90 minutes in a 3-1 victory for Les Bleus, but had been left out ever since due to injuries and lack of playing time.

In a press conference, the French coach Didier Deschamps was asked about the decision to call Nkunku up for the first time in a while.

“He hasn’t been spared by injuries. He has very interesting potential, and I’m convinced of his talent. His playing time is limited at the moment because of his club change, but I trust him,” he said (via MilanPosts).
