Santiago Gimenez has revealed that he was a fan of AC Milan growing up, and reiterated that he will be at the club next season.
Gimenez was Milan’s big splash of the most recent winter transfer window as he arrived from Feyenoord in a deal that could reach €35m, with €32m of it guaranteed. He started in red-hot form before struggling more for goals and eventually being benched.
This led to suggestions that he could even leave the Rossoneri just a few months after joining, which admittedly did not come from very authoritative sources. Milan will sign a new striker though as Igli Tare confirmed, and we wrote at length about why casting the Mexican aside would be unfair.
Gimenez gave an interview to the YouTube channel ‘PelucheEn ElEstuche‘ in which he also spoke about Milan among many other topics. His comments were relayed by MilanPress.
What’s the plan for you after the Gold Cup?
“Now I can take a bit of vacation, thank God. I have to be back by August 4th, my teammates are already training.”
How many international players did Milan have called up?
“I think most, except for Pulisic, who didn’t want to go. We’ve been going without a break for four years, especially him, who always gets called up.
“Normally, when you get called up, you don’t get many days off afterwards. He preferred to rest this month and a half ahead of the World Cup to prepare for next season.”

Will Cruz Azul get some money if you are sold?
“Milan bought me 100%, Cruz Azul no longer have any percentage. Feyenoord had to give Cruz Azul 20% of my transfer to Milan. When Feyenoord bought me, I left a bit of money, and now that I’ve gone to Milan, I’ve left more money so they can settle down, so they can buy Jovic [laughs].”
Is it true you are a Milan fan?
“I’ve always been a Milan fan as a kid, not Inter or Juventus. I have photos of me as a kid wearing an AC Milan shirt. I liked Zlatan, but he played for another team. I really liked Kaka at the time, he had a Latin soul.”
What is Serie A like?
“There, defending is like an art for them. The last great Italian defenders were Bonucci, Chiellini, Barzagli; they were stars.”
What is the difference in marking?
“The art of the attacker is to deceive the defence. In Italy, everyone is always focused. That’s what I like about Vasquez [a Genoa defender and his compatriot], who has taken this Italian style and doesn’t lose focus. He knows that if he gives an attacker a chance, he’ll be punished.”
What are the fans like?
“In Italy, they’re very passionate.”
