Massimiliano Allegri has expressed his delight regarding Mike Maignan’s renewal, and he confirmed Luka Modric will decide his future.
It looked for a while like things would be very different, but the arrival of Allegri and Igli Tare – as well as the new coaching staff – has managed to mend the situation in recent months.
In the past few days there had been reports that Maignan would put pen to paper on a new multi-year deal, and the announcement of his new deal until 2031 came on Saturday evening. The reaction since has been largely positive, given his importance and form.
Allegri spoke at Milanello on the eve of the trip to face Bologna on Tuesday at his pre-match press conference, and he answered questions on a number of topics. He was asked about the work he did to convince Maignan to renew.
“I didn’t convince Maignan at all. The credit, as it should be because they’ve worked hard and they decide on contracts, goes to the club. After Maignan stayed in the summer, I was confident he could continue at Milan.
“Maignan is a very sensitive guy, I knew he wanted to stay. All that was needed was to get over that misunderstanding in the summer… And then he saved. And he is saving things (smiles). We’ll see about Modric, Luka is the one who will decide whether he wants to continue or not.”
