One of Ibrahima Konate's former mentors has tipped the Liverpool defender for a potential move to Real Madrid.
The French international's contract at Anfield is set to expire next summer, leaving his future hanging in the balance. Discussions over a new deal have taken place, with Konate revealing earlier this year that he had an offer on the table from the Reds.
However, an agreement has yet to be finalized between the two parties. With the ability to negotiate a pre-contract with overseas clubs come January, Konate has caught the eye of both Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain should he decide to depart.
Eric Hely, Konate's former youth coach at FC Sochaux, has now expressed his belief that Konate could thrive at the Bernabeu, even suggesting he surpasses current Madrid center-back Antonio Rudiger in quality.
"I would highlight his charisma and his simplicity, which make him a leader," he told Marca, as quoted by Sport Witness. "He was very clear about that for a boy his age. He wanted to succeed and worked tirelessly, even on his own.
"If he did it at Liverpool, why not at Real Madrid? I'm sure if he gets into Xabi (Alonso)'s dressing room, he won't talk much at first.
"He'll listen and learn, and then he'll establish himself in the group with his personality.
"I don't see him as Varane. He's more of a Desailly type. He gives off a lot of confidence and has a very good footwork.
"I'd say better than Rudiger, who is undoubtedly an athlete, but I think Ibrahima is technically stronger.
"I'm sure he can succeed at Madrid and wherever he wants. I think he'd fit in very well with Xabi.
"He can play in a three-man defence, as he did at Leipzig, and in a four-man defence. He's a kid who never caused any problems.
"I remember when he came from Paris to stay at our residence. And he was always there to help and make life easier. The other kids followed him because of his charisma."
Konate, 26, joined Liverpool four years ago and has since played 132 times for the club.
He's faced several injuries during that time but has impressed when available for selection, helping Liverpool win the Premier League title, FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, and other trophies.
