Tottenham boss Igor Tudor has confirmer Guglielmo Vicaro will return against Liverpool after his decision to change goalkeepers backfired spectacularly against Atletico Madrid.

While the Reds have their own problems, with Arne Slot’s side struggling to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, they pale into comparison when compared to their rival on Sunday, with Spurs fighting just to stay in the Premier League.

The crisis at Tottenham has deepened after a disastrous trip to the Spanish capital in midweek, which has all but confirmed its exit from Europe, with Tudor made to pay for his gamble in net.

The interim boss decided to replace regular first-choice keeper Vicario with Antonin Kinsky, who went on to endure a nightmare Champions League debut as he conceded three goals inside the opening 15 minutes, and was directly at fault for two of them.

The 23-year-old would suffer the ingnominy of being substituted after just 17 minutes, with Tudor not even acknowledging him as he made his way off the pitch.

Tudor, who is facing calls to be fired after losing his first four games in charge, has now confirmed he will restore Vicario to his starting line-up two days before coming up against Liverpool.

On his decision to initially replace the Italian, Tudor said on Friday: “So I can explain that situation, what was the idea.

“The idea was to make [Kinsky] play, because first of all, he's a good goalkeeper, and seeing the situation and the moment we are, for a long period, to give some freshness on the ball, even in a different competition. So it was the idea at the start, but not after what happened, you think it was the right thing to do.

“Before, it was the right thing to do. Then what happened happened, then of course it's a little bit different.”

Asked whether Vicario would return, Tudor responded: “He's good, he's good. He'll be in the goal.”

Despite his brutal decision to replace Kinsky in Madrid, Tudor has insisted the Czech will play against for Tottenham this season.

“No, of course he will play [this season] for sure,” Tudor said. “He came back the day after and was very good in training. Positive. Nothing else.

“So this situation happened, very rare, probably the first and last time in my life and the life of a lot of people but this can happen. It is the same message I said before. You can go out from the situation as a victim. ‘Poor me what happened.’ Everybody sending a message of help and I am with you. This is nice also.

“Sometimes 2025 this social media life became like it is more important what you say than what you do. But as I said before, this is normal, this is a mistake that will happen.

“For sure in his career there will be other mistakes but he has a strength and quality and in front of him is a very good career.”
