'Inexplicable' Tottenham remind former striker of Atletico Madrid

The former Tottenham striker is hoping that his old side does not get relegated from the Premier League in the weeks ahead

Fernando Llorente believes what's happened to his old club Tottenham Hotspur is 'inexplicable' and has compared them to how Atletico Madrid once were.

Tottenham have gone 14 matches without a win in the Premier League this season and sit 18th in the table with two points separating them from safety behind West Ham, three points from Nottingham Forest and now six points behind Leeds after Daniel Farke's side's victory at Manchester United with just six games to go.

Llorente played for Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino at a time when they were constantly in the top four in the Premier League and the big striker played his part in helping them reach the Champions League. It saddens the former Spain international to see what has happened to the Lilywhites as they embark on a new era under Roberto De Zerbi.

"Let’s hope they don’t go down. This year is going badly, it’s inexplicable. After winning the Europa League - I was at San Mames (in Bilbao) that day, and playing in the Champions League this year… they started very well. It’s incredible.

"The level of the Premier League is extremely high. The competitiveness is brutal. If you don’t do things right we’ve seen it many times in other big leagues.

"I remember that great Atletico Madrid team with [Jimmy Floyd] Hasselbaink that still went down to the second division. How is that possible? There are things in football that are hard to explain. But in the end all teams fight, and even if you have great players, if the group is not very united and doesn’t fight together, you may not get out of a difficult situation like the one Tottenham are in now," the Spaniard told Hajper.
