Intermediaries vs. injury worries: Sources disagree over Mateta-Milan hold-up

Just a few hours before the winter window closes, we are none the wiser as to whether AC Milan will sign Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Heading into the final day of the mercato, it emerged that Milan had agreed a deal worth ‘in excess of €30m’ to sign Mateta from Crystal Palace. However, it emerged last night that the club want to undertake further medical tests on the striker’s knee, but an answer was expected by now.

More uncertainty

Things have gone quiet on the Mateta front, with little indication from reliable sources regarding whether the move will be pushed through in the final hours, or if Milan will abandon it completely.

Sacha Tavolieri stated on X: “The latest gathered on the Jean-Philippe Mateta to AC Milan news points more toward an issue related to a formality in the commissioning of intermediaries. Not a physical issue concerning the player. Milan still confident to complete a deal.”

On Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, Matteo Moretto has just offered his take on what is holding things up, suggesting that it is still about the Frenchman’s physical condition rather than to do with financial aspects.

“We expect the verdict on Mateta any moment now. Rumours about Juventus also arose this morning. Additional medical checks are currently underway to assess Mateta’s knee condition,” he said.

“I’d like to point out that we don’t yet know Mateta’s current physical condition because he’s fine, he’s playing, is playing, and will continue to play, but it’s more of a prospective condition.

“It’s important to understand whether Mateta’s knee could be at risk in the future, just how delicate his knee is, not so much in the present. Milan must understand the medical risks involved and proceed with the payment of €30m or more.

“I’m not aware of any attempt by Juventus for Mateta. Right now, the only option for the Frenchman is Milan. Juventus also knew about this medical issue and this knee issue, but Juve would have loaned him, whereas Milan would have bought him outright.”
