Italiano analyses Bologna’s failure to break down Milan’s ‘low block’ in defeat

Vincenzo Italiano was not too disappointed with what he saw from his Bologna side against AC Milan, despite the defeat.

Milan made it back to back wins in Serie A as they beat Bologna 1-0 at San Siro on Sunday night, with Luka Modric the match-winner. The only goal took an hour to come and was probably the only moment of real quality, or at least composure, as the Croatian midfielder fired in from 18 yards.

It should have been a bigger margin of victory in truth as Santiago Gimenez missed some big chances and the woodwork was hit four times. However, the important thing was to pick up the three points and that is exactly what the Rossoneri did.

Bologna reaction

Italiano spoke to DAZN after the final whistle to offer his analysis of what was a second defeat in three games for the Rossoblu, and a second without scoring as well. MilanNews published his quotes which we have translated.

What kind of game was it?

“I’ve said there’s time to get going, and I stand by that. I wasn’t disappointed in the first half; we managed to get into the game three or four times. If we’d been quicker, we could have created some dangerous situations.

“We need to work on integrating the new players, on our rhythm, which made the difference last year – the ball traveled at a different speed. I see huge margins. We need to integrate the new players quickly; they need to get into the swing of things, and we need to accelerate that.

“We prepared for the match knowing that Milan would be in a low block, knowing that we could have the ball for a long time. We weren’t quick to switch sides, and we almost never isolated Cambiaghi.

“We had three of them booked in the first half, and I was convinced we could push forward in those areas in the second half. We lacked pace. We need to improve in every aspect; I wanted to see something different with the ball at our feet. We need to do much more, and we’ll work on it.”

How did Odgaard do in. your eyes?

“The difference was made when we filled the box and he was there. He scored a lot of goals from those crosses that we used much more than tonight. We’re capable of being much more aggressive.

“But he’ll grow, too; let’s remember he’s coming off a nasty tackle. As soon as he’s fit, we’ll see the real Jens again.”

Only one goal scored in the first three games…

“It’s also dictated by the fact that we faced three very strong teams, dictated by the fact that we have to beat them at what we’re capable of. We have to be able to shoot more often, not like we did tonight.

“We faced three strong teams that don’t give you much, but it’s a boost to get back to what we were doing. I have smart guys, we’ll analyse what we could have done better tonight.”
