Jamie Carragher has accused Liverpool supporters of ‘behaving like Manchester United fans’ with regard to Arne Slot’s future at the club.

Slot is facing increasing pressure over his position amid what has been a disappointing season following last year’s title triumph. Fans have already shown signs of losing patience with the Dutchman after Liverpool was booed following the recent draw with Tottenham at Anfield.

Although the club is thought to still be backing Slot, the Liverpool boss has plenty of work to do over the final couple of months of the season, with Champions League qualification still in the balance.

Xabi Alonso’s availability has done nothing to ease the pressure, while Jurgen Klopp’s return to Anfield last week has left some supporters pining for the German once again.

Carragher though is not a fan of the speculation surrounding Slot’s future, and feels Liverpool is in danger of becoming like its closest rival if it fires its head coach this summer.

United has gone through a slew of managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, with the Old Trafford club once again searching for a new manager ahead of next season.

And Carragher wants to avoid his old club going down the same route of trying to find a similar character to Klopp, insisting that the 58-year-old is irreplaceable.

“If Slot leaves Liverpool a year after winning the Premier League title, it signals a more extreme sign of the times: no club is immune to impatience and intolerance when an expensively assembled squad keeps losing, regardless of the mitigating circumstances,” Carragher wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

“Manchester United would have considered themselves similar to Liverpool when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge – proud of how much time and patience they granted managers. Ferguson was United’s 17th permanent appointment. They’ve had seven in the 13 years since he retired.

“Football clubs can choose from many excellent coaches. The question is how many of them could be described as truly special . My fear is Liverpool supporters are already behaving like United fans in the aftermath of Ferguson’s departure.

"They are on such a quest to find the next Klopp – or a charismatic figurehead of similar status – that they will be willing to offload many good managers, season after season, in the potentially forlorn hope of finding the next superstar.

“There is no other Klopp. He was a one-off. His presence at last weekend’s legends game at Anfield was a reminder of his aura.”
