Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has weighed in on the future of Arne Slot, with the Reds boss under pressure to deliver an improved level of performances and results soon

Jamie Carragher says it will be difficult for Liverpool head coach Arne Slot to turn around the negative opinion that some fans have formed at Anfield ahead of a massive week for the Reds.
Liverpool returns from the international break with a visit to Manchester City on Saturday. It then faces an away trip to PSG in the Champions League and a pivotal match against Fulham next weekend.
But with Slot needing to find a way of turning the tide and guiding Liverpool back into Europe's top-tier competition, Carragher is of the belief that this could be a big week or so for him.

"It should be stated from the outset that the discussions around Slot’s position are not to my taste," Carragher wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.
"Sadly, the weight of popular opinion in response to so many poor performances has made them impossible to ignore. Any hope of a good win leading to a period of consistency has yet to materialize.

"The highly vocal negative reaction to the recent home draw with Tottenham Hotspur was an eye-opener, as — for the first time since the end of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure — you could sense the patience of the match-going supporter snap.
"Those frustrations grew after the subsequent loss and poor performance against Brighton and Hove Albion. It went beyond the usual noise from the social media agitators. That usually doesn’t end well for the manager, even if my instinct is to say it feels harsh."
Links with Xabi Alonso are inevitable but Liverpool has stood by its man so far. It is under a year ago that Slot secured the Premier League title.
"My natural inclination is to back Slot because the title win is still fresh in the memory," Carragher continued. "The reason I want Slot to remain in charge in August is that it will mean Liverpool will have won the FA Cup or the Champions League.
"The problem is that indifferent — or in some cases very poor — performances have been the norm for 12 months, going as far back as last year’s Carabao Cup Final defeat to Newcastle.

"That’s why so many are conflicted as they try to reach a conclusion on the next course of action.
"The longer this goes on, the greater the concern that it will continue to get worse. If Slot is a truly elite coach, why has he been unable to reverse this season’s alarming slide?"
Liverpool.com says: Slot needs a strong end to this season to convince fans that things are heading in the right direction. Get that, and Liverpool will bounce into pre-season and the mood will be completely different.
End the year with another slump, however, and Liverpool supporters whose patience is already wearing thin will take even more convincing. This feels like a huge period to come.
