Jamie Carragher has hit back after receiving criticism from some Liverpool supporters, having placed Mohamed Salah outside his top five players in the club’s history.

Liverpool released a video on Thursday in which Carragher ranked his top 10 greatest Reds players of all time. The former defender had teased the list during an appearance on the Stick to Football podcast the day before, in which he gave his reaction to Salah announcing his decision to leave the club.

The Egyptian made it to number six on Carragher’s list, just ahead of current teammate Virgil van Dijk who made it to number eight. Ahead of him on the list were Ian Rush, John Barnes, Graeme Souness, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard.

Carragher though has come in for criticism from some fans, with the former defender hitting back at one in particular.

The supporter in question had slammed the timing of the video after Salah’s announcement earlier in the week, and seemed to take issue with Gerrard being ranked at number one while the winger was at number six, branding Carragher as "one of Salah’s biggest critics."

Responding on X, Carragher said: “It’s not poor timing from anyone, I did this interview before Salah announced his decision. Then went on the overlap a day after the Salah announcement & brought up I’d put him 6th on the LFC list.

“The club decided to put it out before I gave away my full list!”

In another post, Carragher added: “I’m not one of his biggest critics, when have I ever criticised Salah the player. I said he’s the 2nd best foreign player ever in the PL!

“You & plenty of others don’t know enough about the clubs [sic] history & are being very disrespectful to other players on that list!!!!!”

Carragher had praised Salah earlier in the week as he ranked Salah only behind Thierry Henry as the Premier League’s greatest foreign player, placing him ahead of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne.

Liverpool.com says: It is truly ludicrous that supposed ‘fans’ could seemingly take issue with Gerrard being ranked ahead of Salah.

As good as Salah has been, there is absolutely no way he would rank ahead of Gerrard or Dalglish. You could make an argument for him to be higher than sixth, but that in itself should be seen as an absolute honor, given the company he’s keeping in that list.

For context, behind him were Ian Callaghan, Kevin Keegan, Van Dijk and Alan Hansen. Being placed ahead of them is one hell of an achievement in itself.

And at the end of the day, it’s Carragher’s personal list. If he really had that big of a problem with Salah, he could have left him off it completely.
