Jamie Carragher makes feelings clear on Mohamed Salah spats before Liverpool exit

Jamie Carragher made it clear that he holds no personal grudges against Mohamed Salah after it was confirmed last night that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

Salah signed a two-year contract extension on Merseyside last year, but has endured a frustrating 2025-26 campaign, falling well short of the standards he set last season – much like most of his Liverpool teammates.

The Egyptian will leave as one of the club's all-time greats, having won two Premier Leagues, a Champions League, and several domestic cups. In a statement issued on social media, Salah said: “Hello, everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come.

"This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

"I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, this people, would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club."

He added: "Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life, I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and to my family.

“Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

Along with his on-field brilliance, there have also been a few negative flashpoints – the likes of which usually accompany any world-class player with an elite mindset.

Most recently, in December, he accused Liverpool of throwing him under the bus after he was left on the bench for a draw against Leeds, also saying that he no longer had any kind of relationship with boss Arne Slot.

Those comments led to fierce criticism from Liverpool legend Carragher, but Carragher maintained following Salah's exit announcement that he has always "loved" the 33-year-old as a player.

"There are those who will inevitably list the occasional public disagreements between Salah and myself over the years and claim that there was some underlying personal problem between us," Carragher said in a Telegraph column.

"Let me state without any hesitation: as a player, I absolutely love Mohamed Salah.

"When he delivered the occasional social media post or interview criticizing the club or its decisions, it was my natural, instinctive reaction to defend Liverpool and take a dim view, in the same principled way I defended Chelsea against Enzo Maresca, or Manchester United against the perceived attacks of Ruben Amorim, which all occurred around the same time this season.

"My allegiance is, and always will be, to the club."
