Mohamed Salah could find himself closely linked to Michael Edwards once again during the next stage of his career, with the Liverpool chief linked with a move to Saudi too.

Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the player confirmed on Tuesday night, after nine seasons with the Reds. The 33-year-old was magnificent as Liverpool won the Premier League last term, but has endured a frustrating 2025-26 campaign, bringing about the decision to leave the club 12 months ahead of the expiry of his contract in 2027.

In a statement issued on social media, Salah said: “Hello, everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. "This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

"I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, this people, would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club."

He added: "Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life, I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and to my family.

“Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

Salah's next step is yet to be announced, but one of the most likely next destinations for him is the Saudi Pro League (SPL).

Salah remains the biggest-name soccer player in the Middle East and would be able to command a monstrous contract in Saudi Arabia, despite his drop-off in form.

In 2023, SPL club Al-Ittihad made a verbal offer of around $200 million to sign Salah at the end of the summer transfer window but Liverpool turned it down.

Michael Edwards

As well as Salah, another big figure at Liverpool is also being linked with a move the Saudi Pro League. Liverpool chief executive Edwards is also said to be being targeted for a move to Saudi Arabia.

Edwards made his name at Liverpool as the sporting director between 2016 and 2022, and returned to the set-up in 2024, with one of his main tasks as an employee of Fenway Sports Group to build a multi-club model, similar to the City Football Group model, of which Manchester City as a part.

However, FSG has since changed its mind on that approach, deeming many of the clubs that it looked at to be overvalued.

That could leave Edwards searching for a new challenge, and The Independent reports that such a challenge could come in the form of a move to Saudi Arabia.
