Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool is now “in crisis time” following Saturday’s defeat against Brentford.
The Reds were beaten 3-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium in another performance that underlined the champions’ fragilities. Liverpool gave away two soft goals, once again failed to deal with set-pieces and couldn’t play with the sort of wagger that led Arne Slot’s side to securing a first-place finish last season.
The loss in West London was Liverpool’s fourth Premier League defeat in a row, the club’s worst run since February 2021. The Reds also sit seven points off Arsenal at the top of the table after it beat Crystal Palace 1-0 on Sunday.
Carragher feels the physical difference between the teams could be a decisive factor in the title race and that Liverpool must undergo a serious inquest following its expensive summer outlay.
“Losing four games in a row for Brentford would be a disaster,” he said on Sky Sports.
“To see the champions do it with the expenditure in the summer means we're in crisis time for Liverpool right now.
“There will be a lot of serious questions asked in the dressing room between the players and the coaching staff and the people above the manager. When they've looked at what they've spent, they'll be looking for a lot more.
“Liverpool have to look at the physicality and height within their team because, right now, I don't think they have enough,” he added.
Most now see Arsenal as favorite for the title. It has conceded as many goals all season as Liverpool shipped at the Gtech, and while the champions have lost four in a row, the Gunners have managed four successive victories.
“That’s the big difference between to last season: whenever Liverpool dropped points Arsenal didn't capitalize and we highlighted last week that Arsenal won a game when Liverpool lost and they've done exactly the same again right now, so they're in a great position,” said Carragher.
“The only thing for Arsenal and the supporters, because they want the Premier League so much, because it's been so long for them, it almost feels such a long wait until May.
“You know, there's a long way to go in the Premier League. Things can go wrong. But right now, the way the Premier League is this season, it takes a long throw, set-pieces, direct play, Arsenal are the best-equipped team to deal with that.”
