Jamie Carragher predicts another Liverpool exit straight after derby win over Everton

Jamie Carragher has suggested that another Liverpool player could be leaving the club soon, having made the prediction straight after the dramatic win over Everton

Jamie Carragher has hinted that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk could depart the club next summer when his contract at Anfield expires.

Just moments after his last-gasp header secured victory over Everton in the first ever Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Carragher made quite the assertion while discussing Liverpool's 2-1 triumph, with the goals coming from Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

He told Sky Sports: "The result is absolutely huge for Liverpool when you consider the Chelsea result yesterday. When that board went up for 11 minutes, I'd have shook hands with anyone and taken a point from a Liverpool point of view.

"With the situation with the goalkeeper, Everton were a little bit more threatening. Liverpool were a small team towards the end of that game and I was fearful of set-pieces.

"When you think of how Liverpool have won this game - two of the absolute legends of the club have done it. They won't be here much longer. Salah and probably Van Dijk in 12 months' time.

"Two of the absolute greats. Salah has done it again against Liverpool's biggest rivals, as he always does. Against Everton or Man Utd, you can always rely upon him."

Van Dijk has had his difficulties at points this season, yet has now netted crucial goals against both Sunderland and Everton. Having signed a new two-year deal at Anfield last summer, a departure in 2027 remains a distinct possibility, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Andy Robertson, meanwhile, remains a Liverpool player whose current contract expires at the end of the season, at which point he will be departing the club.

The Scotland international delivered an outstanding performance at left-back, with Ibrahima Konate among those encouraging him to celebrate in front of the away supporters.

Third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was similarly nudged in that direction after coming on as a replacement for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who sustained an injury during Beto's equalizing goal.

This appears to be a further concern for Slot, albeit only in the short term, as he confirmed following the final whistle. The situation surrounding Hugo Ekitike, however, is far more troubling.

The striker suffered a serious Achilles injury as Liverpool was eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

Slot and his squad are now firmly focused on securing a return to that competition next season, with their victory over Chelsea meaning just nine points from their remaining five games will be sufficient.

Wins for Aston Villa and Manchester United, who also defeated the Blues, edged them closer to locking down a top-five finish, while Liverpool simultaneously dented Everton's hopes of European football with its triumph.
